How dangerous are moles? Moles are actually an abnormal multiplication of the pigment cells of the skin. They are usually brown or black, but may sometimes be pink. They can be smooth or irregular, flat or raised and may even be hairy. They can be present absolutely anywhere on the body. Moles begin to appear in childhood and continue to increase during adolescence. An average adult has between 15-20 moles spread over the body.
Majority of the moles are entirely harmless. Rarely, however they become cancerous. For this reason, any mole which appears later in life or one which changes in size rapidly or one which has a tendency to bleed needs to be shown to the doctor. Ordinarily, moles are best left alone unless one is causing problems or is really unsightly. Removal, unless it is done carefully and by an expert, can leave behind ugly scars.
How serious is skin cancer? There are a number of different types of skin cancers: some are very very slow growing and easily treatable, others spread rapidly and are difficult to treat.
Some facts about skin cancer you should know:
1. Skin cancer generally occurs either in areas which are frequently injured (like the foot) or on areas which are exposed to the sun (like the face).
2. Skin cancer is more common among the fair-skinned and in those parts of the world where there is plenty of sunshine.
3. It may develop in bum scars, and in old wounds.
4. It can develop in areas of the skin exposed to extremes of temperature, for instance, kangri cancer occurs on the part of the skin which is in contact with the kangri.
The treatment depends on the type of skin cancer and how much it has spread - the earlier the treatment is started, the greater is the chance I of a complete recovery. Skin cancer can often be cured permanently without any risk of recurrence. The different types of treatments available are- surgery, radiotherapy and anti-cancer-drugs. Which treatment is used depends on the stage of the cancer and the type of cancer. Sometimes a combination of treatment is given.
