Cysts - Treatment and Symptoms

Cyst is an abnormal, harmless sac-like growth which contain fluid like a blister in the deeper layers of the skin. They form from the lining of a hair follicle that gets blocked. It is not known why cysts appear, nor why some persons get many of them. A cyst is a closed pocket or pouch of tissue. It can be filled with air, fluid, pus, or other material. It can form in many different areas of the body including the skin, genitals and internal organs. A cyst can vary in size from a tiny sac right up to a heavy bag containing litres of fluid. The common symptom is localised swelling, but a cyst may or may not be painful. Sometimes, depending on the cause and location, a cyst contains semi-solid or solid material. The typical treatment for any cyst is surgical removal and a routine test for cancer, even though most cysts are benign. All unusual lumps need to be professionally investigated.

It is like a fluid-filled lump under the skin often produced by over-secreting gland. They are small cavities that have a lining membrane and contain fluid or semisolid material or air. They may occur as a result of a developmental error in the embryo before birth, or they may be caused by an infection, or, in some cases, they arise spontaneously and no cause is found. A single cyst is likely to be an innocent finding, but multiple cysts, especially in the kidneys, can be indicative of polycystic kidney disease and may lead to renal problems.

Treatment of Cysts

Treatment of cysts include:

Small cysts (eg. less than 5 mm) don't usually need treatment, but can be readily removed by a minor surgical procedure. Larger ones are usually removed because they are unsightly or because they have been inflamed.Cysts are treated by making a small surgical opening into the skin and removing the sac ( excision biopsy ). This is done under local anaesthetic and may require stitches, removed a few days later. Very occasionally the cyst recurs and needs further treatment
