Genital warts may be as small as 1 to 2 millimeters in diameter - smaller than the width of a ballpoint pen refill - or may multiply into large clusters. It is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Papilloma viruses cause small growths otherwise referred to as warts on the skin and mucous membranes. An Infection of Condylomata acuminata in the genital and anal regions with hpv can cause warts (anogenital condyloma) on the penis, vulva, urethra, vagina, cervix, and around the anus (perianal). In adults, the disorder is considered a sexually-transmitted disease, but in children the virus appears to be transmitted with or without sexual contact.
