Cherry Angioma - Treatment and Symptoms

Cherry angioma is painless and harmless, benign skin tumor of unknown origin which are cherrry red to purple in colour. It appears most frequently after age 40. They are harmless but many persons want them to be removed for cosmetic reasons.Cherry angiomas are the most common vascular lesions to appear on human skin. They rarely occur on the hands or feet. There are many different types of angiomas. An angioma is a benign growth that consists of small blood vessels. These tumors can be located anywhere on the body. Some of the different types include spider angiomas, cherry angiomas, and angiokeratomas. The cause of most types of angiomas is not known. Cherry angiomas and are due to aging and do not have any known significance. Spider angiomas are more common in childhood and during pregnancy, and a few can appear on anyone. When present in large numbers, the may warn of liver damage. Angiokeratomas are an overgrowth of blood vessels and skin cells. They are not dangerous.

After various reseraches it is found that about 70% of people of age 70 or older have cherry angiomas.. The cherry-red "bumps" develop alone or in groups, most often on the torso and frequently on the face, scalp, neck, arms and legs. Angiomas do not need to be treated unless they bleed or are bothering one. They can be treated with electrodessication , liquid nitrogen or laser. Large angiomas can bleed profusely when they are injured. Because of this, don't puncture them or try to remove them yourself. No one knows exactly what causes them.You can develop cherry angiomas anytime in your life. But mainly it occurs after age of 40.

What are the symptoms of Cherry Angioma ?

Follwoing are the main symptoms of Cherry Angioma

Skin lesion or growth:

  • Small -- pinhead size to about 1/4 inch in diameter
  • Bright red
  • Smooth

What are the causes of Cherry Angioma ?

Why Cherry angiomas appear is unknown. There is always possibility for appearing of them at any part of body but generally they appear on the trunk The most common thing which we find is age factor it appears after the age of 40. It is painless and harmless but they may bleed profusely if get injured. They are benign , fairly common skin growths that vary in size. .

Treatment of Cherry Angioma

Cherry Angiomas as discussed earlier are not harmfull or painfull so need not be removed but for cosmetics reason they can be treated the most common procedures used in treatment of cherry angioma are

(1) electrosurgery a minor surgical procedure during where a special electrical needle-like instrument is used to remove the angioma,

(2) cryotherapy- freezing the affected area with liquid nitrogen,

(3) laser vaporization - using an intense beam of light to remove the angioma. This technique involves minimal harm to surrounding skin tissue. Unless the lesion is particularly large (1/4 inch across or more), you can expect excellent cosmetic results.
