How do emotions affect the skin?

May 4th, 2007

Emotions play a very important role in deciding the condition of the skin. Skin is a barometer of the physical and emotional condition of a person. The state of mind is reflected on the skin. Tensions or unhappiness can cause flaking, patchy dryness and peeling of skin. When we are anxious, depressed, angry or unhappy, the body responds by tightening and constricting the pores, clogging them and preventing the disposal of waste. This destroys the cells and makes the skin surface look dull and flaky. The affected areas are mainly the temples, cheeks, and chin because the sebaceous glands provide more oil and fat under emotional stress.

On the other hand, happiness causes the skin to relax, pores to open and blood circulation increases oxygen supply to the skin, brings a glow to the face.
